WHEREAS, The year 2007 marks the 60th anniversary of KMHT
Radio in Marshall, and this occasion provides an opportunity to
reflect on the history and achievements of this longtime voice of
  the community; and
WHEREAS, In March 1947, 1450 AM began operation in Marshall,
becoming the city's first local station; owned by a group of
veterans who had recently returned from service in World War II, the
station was initially limited to 250 watts of broadcasting power
but nonetheless won the allegiance of many local residents; and
WHEREAS, After 14 years of operation, KMHT was granted
permission to raise its broadcast power to 1,000 watts in 1961,
which allowed it to reach a much larger area and a greater number of
  listeners; and
WHEREAS, The station expanded to the FM dial in 1981 with the
launch of programming on KZEY 103.9; in 2003, the FM station was
allowed to switch its call letters to KMHT to match its AM
counterpart and to reflect its connection to Marshall's inaugural
  station; and
WHEREAS, KMHT Radio was owned for a time by boxing champion
  George Foreman, who donated it to Wiley College in the late 1990s;
Hanszen Broadcast Group, the current owners, bought the AM and FM
  stations in 2002; and
WHEREAS, Today, Marshall's venerable broadcasting voice
offers a mix of news, country music, sports, and popular features
such as Paul Harvey; the stations' strong news content includes
local reports and programming from Texas State Network News, and
its efforts to inform and entertain the community have been
recognized with a number of local awards; and
WHEREAS, After six decades on the air, KMHT Radio remains a
vital presence in the Marshall area, and the management and staff
may take great pride in their many years of steadfast service to the
residents of East Texas; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas

prepared for the station as an expression of high regard by the
