R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children in San |
|
Antonio is marking its 60th anniversary in 2007, and this occasion |
|
provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the rich history of this |
|
important institution; and |
|
WHEREAS, Founded in 1947 by Dela White and John White, Sr., |
|
Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children was inspired by the |
|
couple's determination to see their daughter, Tuleta, and other |
|
deaf children learn to speak, function independently, and become |
|
successful members of society; beginning with seven pupils and one |
|
teacher, the school quickly expanded, and in 1952 it moved to a new |
|
location at 103 Tuleta Drive, where it is still housed today; and |
|
WHEREAS, With a current enrollment of 158 pupils and an |
|
impressive 6:1 student-to-faculty ratio, Sunshine Cottage School |
|
for Deaf Children offers a wide variety of services for its |
|
students, including a newborn hearing evaluation center and |
|
parent-infant, early childhood, elementary, and off-campus |
|
mainstream programs; moreover, the school offers services in |
|
speech-language pathology and audiology and cochlear implant |
|
programming; and |
|
WHEREAS, In addition to educating those with hearing |
|
impairments, this outstanding school has been a leader in community |
|
outreach, educating children's agencies and medical personnel |
|
about how to identify hearing loss and the best ways to help those |
|
in need; the school also works in cooperation with The University of |
|
Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in its master's degree |
|
program in deaf education and hearing science; and |
|
WHEREAS, Since its inception, Sunshine Cottage School has |
|
helped children who are hearing impaired to achieve their full |
|
potential, and in carrying forth that mission for six decades, the |
|
school has become an internationally respected institution; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Sunshine |
|
Cottage School for Deaf Children and extend to its faculty, staff, |
|
and students sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
