R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Emily Rose Smith of Chalk Bluff has been named a
  National Merit Commended Scholar; and
         WHEREAS, Established in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship
  Program honors less than one percent of all high school seniors each
  year, based on their scores on the Preliminary Scholastic
  Assessment Test; the designation represents an opportunity for
  young men and women to compete for scholarship awards and win entry
  into some of the nation's best schools; and
         WHEREAS, A senior at Vanguard College Preparatory School in
  Waco, Ms. Smith is the daughter of Roger and Dottie Smith; she is a
  National Debate semifinalist and a member of the National Honor
  Roll, the National Society of High School Scholars, and Who's Who
  Among American High School Students; and
         WHEREAS, Emily Smith has demonstrated exceptional
  intelligence, initiative, and maturity in pursuing her academic
  goals, and it is appropriate to take this opportunity to commend her
  on her academic achievements; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Emily Rose Smith on her selection
  as a National Merit Commended Scholar and extend to her sincere best
  wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
