R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Paul Steven Habelt of the Henderson
  County Sheriff's Department lost his life in the line of duty on May
  17, 2007, at the age of 63, and his tragic death has brought great
  sorrow to all who knew this esteemed law enforcement professional;
  and
         WHEREAS, Just hours after attending an annual memorial
  service for fallen police personnel as part of National Peace
  Officers Month, Deputy Habelt was killed while investigating a
  domestic disturbance; and
         WHEREAS, A native of Pacific Grove, California, Paul Steven
  Habelt was born on October 1, 1943, to Milton and Florence Beamish
  Habelt; he attended public school in the San Francisco Bay area and
  ably served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman; and
         WHEREAS, Deputy Habelt was a peace officer for 43 years,
  beginning his career with the Oakland Police Department; he later
  served with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department before retiring
  due to an injury he received in the line of duty; and
         WHEREAS, After moving to Henderson County in 1993, Deputy
  Habelt joined the Henderson County Sheriff's Department the
  following year; during his tenure, he held the ranks of patrol
  deputy, sergeant, lieutenant, and investigator, and he performed
  his duties with pride and professionalism; and
         WHEREAS, Deputy Habelt was a resident of Eustace and was a
  member of Chapter No. 28 of the Blue Knights and the Henderson
  County Peace Officers Association; a respected member of his
  community, he cared deeply for the welfare and well-being of his
  fellow citizens; and
         WHEREAS, Although his loved ones and law enforcement
  colleagues are understandably saddened by his passing, they may
  take some comfort in their fond memories of Paul Steven Habelt, a
  police officer whose achievements during his years on this earth
  are deserving of the greatest respect and admiration; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Paul Steven Habelt and
  extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
  Nita Habelt; to his sons, Christopher Habelt and Christopher
  Stanberry; to his daughters, Stacey Marckese and Kristie Scherbak;
  to his 13 grandchildren; and to the other relatives, friends, and
  fellow officers of this dedicated lawman; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Deputy Paul
  Steven Habelt.
