| WHEREAS, Renowned philanthropist Harold C. Simmons of Dallas | ||
| has made generous gifts to the Alba-Golden Independent School | ||
| District and to his hometown of Golden; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A native of Golden, Mr. Simmons's father served as | ||
| superintendent of Golden schools where his mother also taught; Mr. | ||
| Simmons earned bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from | ||
| The University of Texas at Austin and subsequently enjoyed a career | ||
| in banking and business; in the early 1970s, he became a highly | ||
| successful investor, acquiring control of several publicly traded | ||
| companies, and he has since established himself as a major | ||
| benefactor of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center | ||
| at Dallas, the Children's Medical Center of Dallas, Parkland | ||
| Memorial Hospital, and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Foundation, to | ||
| name but a few of the worthwhile institutions he has supported; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Simmons remains dedicated to the success of his | ||
| hometown as well, and his April 2006 donation of more than $1.7 | ||
| million to Alba-Golden ISD was accomplished through the transfer of | ||
| 23,700 shares of Titanium Metals Corporation stock; this gift is | ||
| earmarked for the construction of a four-court tennis complex and a | ||
| new field house, and Mr. Simmons specified that leftover funds | ||
| could be used as the district deemed necessary; this substantial | ||
| contribution followed just one year after he gave $100,000 for the | ||
| installation of a new heating and air-conditioning system in the | ||
| Alba-Golden Elementary School gym; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A tireless and faithful supporter of the Golden | ||
| Sweet Potato Festival, Mr. Simmons's most recent gift to the people | ||
| of Golden is the Harold Simmons Community Center, a beautiful | ||
| facility in downtown Golden that is available for civic events, | ||
| family reunions, church gatherings, and other worthwhile uses; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Those individuals who step forward to share their | ||
| resources with others are indeed deserving of our profound | ||
| admiration and gratitude, and it is most appropriate to honor Mr. | ||
| Simmons for his benevolent support of Alba-Golden ISD and the | ||
| people of Golden; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby commend Harold C. Simmons for his remarkable | ||
| gifts to the Alba-Golden Independent School District and the | ||
| community of Golden, and his extraordinary contributions in behalf | ||
| of his fellow Texans; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for Mr. Simmons as an expression of high regard by the | ||
| Texas House of Representatives. | ||
