R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The members of the Texas MATHCOUNTS Team took
  first-place honors at the 2007 MATHCOUNTS National Competition; and
         WHEREAS, Led by Sugar Land teacher Jeff Boyd, this team of
  outstanding young "mathletes" includes Bobby Shen, a sixth-grader
  at First Colony Middle School in Sugar Land, Jeff Feng, an
  eighth-grader at T. H. Rogers School in Houston, and Kevin Li, a
  seventh-grader at A&M Consolidated Middle School in College
  Station; rounding out the group is eighth-grader Kevin Chen of
  First Colony Middle School in Sugar Land, whose first-place finish
  in both the individual and Master Rounds, along with his team's
  victory, secured a triple victory sweep for Texas at this year's
  event; the winners receive scholarships, notebook computers, and a
  trip to the White House to meet with the president; and
         WHEREAS, Nearly 40,000 students from 6,000 schools across the
  country participate in local MATHCOUNTS contests, but only 228
  middle school students make it to the national competition;
  participants benefit greatly from the program's mission to
  encourage critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and to
  promote awareness of careers available in mathematics,
  engineering, technology, and science; supported through
  appropriations by the Texas Legislature, MATHCOUNTS in the Lone
  Star State emphasizes the educational importance of developing
  expertise in such areas as algebra, computation, consumer math,
  logic, probability, and statistics; and
         WHEREAS, The members of the 2007 Texas MATHCOUNTS Team have
  demonstrated remarkable skill and dedication, and their victory at
  the national competition has brought tremendous pride to their
  families, to their schools, and to the Lone Star State; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Kevin Chen, Jeff Feng, Kevin Li,
  Bobby Shen, and their coach, Jeff Boyd, on winning first place at
  the 2007 MATHCOUNTS National Competition and extend to these
  outstanding young mathletes sincere best wishes for continued
  achievement; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
