R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Lancaster residents are excited about the new |
|
|
Lancaster Visitors Center that will be housed in the city's |
|
|
historic Interurban Building in downtown Lancaster once |
|
|
renovations of the building are completed; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Built in 1911, the Interurban Building was home to |
|
|
the Texas Interurban Railway that ran from Waxahachie through Red |
|
|
Oak, Lancaster, and Dallas to Sherman-Denison until the 1950s; it |
|
|
was also the region's first electric-powered building and where |
|
|
area residents' electricity bills were paid for more than 50 years; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Interurban Building renovation project received |
|
|
a federal grant for 1999-2000 through the Statewide Transportation |
|
|
Enhancement Program administered by the Texas Department of |
|
|
Transportation because of the historic project's impact for Texas |
|
|
roadways, as the project is located on State Highway 342 across the |
|
|
street from Heritage Park and Gazebo; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Recognizing the new Lancaster Visitors Center as an |
|
|
auxiliary Texas museum would help transform the Interurban Building |
|
|
into a premier attraction for the area; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Lancaster Visitors Center will truly be a unique |
|
|
resource for both residents and visitors of Texas alike and is |
|
|
indeed deserving of this designation; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby recognize the Lancaster Visitors Center as an |
|
|
auxiliary Texas museum. |
