| WHEREAS, Lancaster residents are excited about the new | ||
| Lancaster Visitors Center that will be housed in the city's | ||
| historic Interurban Building in downtown Lancaster once | ||
| renovations of the building are completed; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Built in 1911, the Interurban Building was home to | ||
| the Texas Interurban Railway that ran from Waxahachie through Red | ||
| Oak, Lancaster, and Dallas to Sherman-Denison until the 1950s; it | ||
| was also the region's first electric-powered building and where | ||
| area residents' electricity bills were paid for more than 50 years; | ||
| and | ||
| WHEREAS, The Interurban Building renovation project received | ||
| a federal grant for 1999-2000 through the Statewide Transportation | ||
| Enhancement Program administered by the Texas Department of | ||
| Transportation because of the historic project's impact for Texas | ||
| roadways, as the project is located on State Highway 342 across the | ||
| street from Heritage Park and Gazebo; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Recognizing the new Lancaster Visitors Center as an | ||
| auxiliary Texas museum would help transform the Interurban Building | ||
| into a premier attraction for the area; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The Lancaster Visitors Center will truly be a unique | ||
| resource for both residents and visitors of Texas alike and is | ||
| indeed deserving of this designation; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 80th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby recognize the Lancaster Visitors Center as an | ||
| auxiliary Texas museum. | ||
