A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to the compensation of official court reporters for
district courts.
       BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
       SECTION 1.  Section 52.051, Government Code, is amended by
amending Subsections (a), (b), and (c) and adding Subsection (a-1)
to read as follows:
       (a)  Except as provided by Subsection (a-1), an [An] official
district court reporter shall be paid a salary set by the order of
the judge of the court. This salary is in addition to transcript
fees, fees for a statement of facts, and other necessary expenses
authorized by law.
       (a-1)  The salary of an official court reporter of a district
court of a judicial district that is composed only of a single
county shall be set by the commissioners court of that county. This
salary is in addition to transcript fees, fees for a statement of
facts, and other necessary expenses authorized by law.
       (b)  The salary of an official district court reporter [set
by the judge] may not be lower than the salary that [official court]
reporter received on January 1, 1972.
       (c)  An order of a judge authorized by Subsection (a) to set
the official district court reporter's salary that increases 
[increasing] the salary of the [an official district court]
reporter must be submitted to the commissioners court of each
county in the judicial district not later than September 1
immediately before the adoption of the county budget for the next
year. A commissioners court may allow an extension of this time
limit.
       SECTION 2.  The change in law made by this Act applies only
to the salary of an official court reporter for a district court set
on or after the effective date of this Act.
       SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2007.
