A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to the use of certain funds by certain school districts and |
|
open-enrollment charter schools for the development and |
|
implementation of strategies for dropout prevention. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is |
|
amended by adding Section 29.916 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 29.916. DROPOUT PREVENTION STRATEGIES. |
|
(a) Notwithstanding Sections 39.114 and 42.152, a school district |
|
or open-enrollment charter school with a high dropout rate, as |
|
determined by the commissioner, shall use 25 percent of the |
|
school's high school allotment under Section 39.114 and 25 percent |
|
of the school's compensatory education allotment under Section |
|
42.152 for the development and implementation of research-based |
|
strategies for dropout prevention, as approved by the commissioner. |
|
(b) The commissioner shall adopt rules for the |
|
administration and implementation of this section. |
|
SECTION 2. As soon as practicable after the effective date |
|
of this Act, the commissioner of education shall adopt rules as |
|
required by Section 29.916, Education Code, as added by this Act. |
|
SECTION 3. This Act applies beginning with the 2007-2008 |
|
school year. |
|
SECTION 4. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2007. |
