A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to providing notice of a required court appearance to a
criminal defendant and the defendant's surety.
       BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
       SECTION 1.  Chapter 17, Code of Criminal Procedure, is
amended by adding Article 17.085 to read as follows:
       Art. 17.085.  NOTICE OF APPEARANCE DATE.  Not later than the
fifth day preceding the date a defendant who has posted a bail bond
is required to appear before a court, the court shall give notice of
the appearance date to:
             (1)  the defendant; and
             (2)  the surety on the defendant's bond.
       SECTION 2.  This Act applies only to a bond issued on or
after the effective date of this Act. A bond issued before the
effective date of this Act is governed by the law in effect at the
time the bond was issued, and the former law is continued in effect
for that purpose.
       SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2007.
