A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to eligibility for student financial assistance awarded |
|
from designated tuition charged by institutions of higher |
|
education. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Section 56.011(b), Education Code, is amended to |
|
read as follows: |
|
(b) To be eligible for financial assistance under this |
|
section, a student must establish financial need in accordance with |
|
rules and procedures established by the Texas Higher Education |
|
Coordinating Board. In awarding assistance under this section, the |
|
institution shall give highest priority [Priority shall be given] |
|
to students who demonstrate the greatest financial need according |
|
to the rules of [meet] the coordinating board [definition of
|
|
financial need and whose cost for tuition and required fees is not
|
|
met through other non-loan financial assistance programs]. |
|
SECTION 2. Section 56.012(b), Education Code, is amended to |
|
read as follows: |
|
(b) To be eligible for financial assistance under this |
|

SECTION 3. The change in law made by this Act to Sections |
|
56.011 and 56.012, Education Code, applies only to financial aid |
|
awarded for a semester or term that begins on or after the effective |
|
date of this Act, and does not affect a student's right to receive |
|
financial aid awarded before the effective date of this Act for any |
|
part of the 2007-2008 academic year. |
|
SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2007. |
