S.C.R. No. 67

SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes pleasure
in recognizing the City of Lampasas, which was nicknamed many years
ago "The Saratoga of the South"; and
WHEREAS, Nestled in the picturesque Hill Country, Lampasas
was known as "The Saratoga of the South" as far back as the late
1800s; the title refers to the area's many springs, creeks, and
rivers that offer both a tranquil ambience and recreational
opportunities, much like the famous Saratoga Springs, New York; and
WHEREAS, The seat of Lampasas County, Lampasas was originally
settled by John Burleson in 1850, and the city was first named
Burleson; however, the name was gradually changed to Lampasas
Springs in reference to the existence of seven local mineral
springs; when Lampasas County was created in 1856, the city was
renamed Lampasas, and it was officially incorporated in 1883; and
WHEREAS, Lampasas County currently enjoys many fine
attributes, such as two significant springs producing more than
3,000,000 gallons of water daily; its name is Spanish for the lilies
that were found along the county's streams when it was organized
from Bell and Travis Counties; and
WHEREAS, Tonkawa, Apache, and Comanche Indians were all drawn
to the mineral springs in the Lampasas area long before the first
white settlers arrived; the mineral springs then attracted early
European settlers looking for cures for ailments in the cool
  sulphur water; and
WHEREAS, The City of Lampasas is a participant in the Texas
Main Street Project and is home to the Keystone Hotel, an early
Texas stagecoach stop, and to the Keystone Square Museum, which is
housed in an early frontier building; the city's sulphur springs
flow close to the native stone courthouse, which is on the National
Register of Historic Places; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 80th Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby join Lampasas County and Lampasas residents in declaring the
City of Lampasas "The Saratoga of the South" and extend best wishes
for the future to its citizens; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared in honor
  of the City of Lampasas.
