CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes pleasure |
|
in recognizing the City of Lampasas, which was nicknamed many years |
|
ago "The Saratoga of the South"; and |
|
WHEREAS, Nestled in the picturesque Hill Country, Lampasas |
|
was known as "The Saratoga of the South" as far back as the late |
|
1800s; the title refers to the area's many springs, creeks, and |
|
rivers that offer both a tranquil ambience and recreational |
|
opportunities, much like the famous Saratoga Springs, New York; and |
|
WHEREAS, The seat of Lampasas County, Lampasas was originally |
|
settled by John Burleson in 1850, and the city was first named |
|
Burleson; however, the name was gradually changed to Lampasas |
|
Springs in reference to the existence of seven local mineral |
|
springs; when Lampasas County was created in 1856, the city was |
|
renamed Lampasas, and it was officially incorporated in 1883; and |
|
WHEREAS, Lampasas County currently enjoys many fine |
|
attributes, such as two significant springs producing more than |
|
3,000,000 gallons of water daily; its name is Spanish for the lilies |
|
that were found along the county's streams when it was organized |
|
from Bell and Travis Counties; and |
|
WHEREAS, Tonkawa, Apache, and Comanche Indians were all drawn |
|
to the mineral springs in the Lampasas area long before the first |
|
white settlers arrived; the mineral springs then attracted early |
|
European settlers looking for cures for ailments in the cool |
|
sulphur water; and |
|
WHEREAS, The City of Lampasas is a participant in the Texas |
|
Main Street Project and is home to the Keystone Hotel, an early |
|
Texas stagecoach stop, and to the Keystone Square Museum, which is |
|
housed in an early frontier building; the city's sulphur springs |
|
flow close to the native stone courthouse, which is on the National |
|
Register of Historic Places; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the 80th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|
hereby join Lampasas County and Lampasas residents in declaring the |
|
City of Lampasas "The Saratoga of the South" and extend best wishes |
|
for the future to its citizens; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared in honor |
|
of the City of Lampasas. |
