A JOINT RESOLUTION
|
|
proposing a constitutional amendment to abolish the office of |
|
county treasurer of Harris County. |
|
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Section 44, Article XVI, Texas Constitution, is |
|
amended by adding Subsection (d) to read as follows: |
|
(d) The office of County Treasurer in Harris County is |
|
abolished. The Commissioners Court of Harris County may employ or |
|
contract with a qualified person or may designate another county |
|
officer to perform any of the functions that would have been |
|
performed by the County Treasurer if the office had not been |
|
abolished. However, the office of County Treasurer in Harris |
|
County is abolished under this subsection only if, at the statewide |
|
election at which this amendment is submitted to the voters, a |
|
majority of the voters of Harris County voting on the question at |
|
that election favor the amendment. |

SECTION 2. The following temporary provision is added to |
|
the Texas Constitution: |
|
TEMPORARY PROVISION. The abolition of the office of County |
|
Treasurer in Harris County under the constitutional amendment |
|
proposed by the 80th Legislature, Regular Session, 2007, providing |
|
for the abolition of that office takes effect January 1, 2008, if |
|
the conditions of Section 44(d), Article XVI, of this constitution, |
|
as added by that constitutional amendment, are met. This provision |
|
expires January 2, 2008. |

SECTION 3. This proposed constitutional amendment shall be |
|
submitted to the voters at an election to be held on November 6, |
|
2007. The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against |
|
the proposition: "The constitutional amendment providing for the |
|
abolition of the office of county treasurer in Harris County." |
