SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 148
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize La Mujer Obrera, which celebrated its 25th anniversary
on December 14, 2006; and
       WHEREAS, Founded in the aftermath of the 1981 El Paso
textile workers' strike, La Mujer Obrera has worked tirelessly to
transform the working and living conditions for Mexican American
women and their families as they struggle to make ends meet; and
       WHEREAS, La Mujer Obrera utilizes many strategies to
achieve its three fundamental goals, which are leadership,
development, and education; in addition to its community
organizing efforts, this exceptional organization reaches out to
the community through such projects as La Escuela Popular and
newspapers like Voz de Mujer and Unidad y Fuerza; and
       WHEREAS, Dedicated to justice in the workplace,
La Mujer Obrera was instrumental in the passage of legislation
that made it a felony to fail to pay workers the wages they had
earned; this outstanding organization has worked hard to give
voice to the concerns of Mexican American women and their
families and is truly deserving of legislative recognition for
its many contributions; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend La Mujer Obrera for its many
accomplishments and extend congratulations to this exemplary
organization on the occasion of its 25th anniversary; and, be it
further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
La Mujer Obrera as an expression of high regard from the
Texas Senate.
