SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 148
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
recognize La Mujer Obrera, which celebrated its 25th anniversary |
|
on December 14, 2006; and |
|
WHEREAS, Founded in the aftermath of the 1981 El Paso |
|
textile workers' strike, La Mujer Obrera has worked tirelessly to |
|
transform the working and living conditions for Mexican American |
|
women and their families as they struggle to make ends meet; and |
|
WHEREAS, La Mujer Obrera utilizes many strategies to |
|
achieve its three fundamental goals, which are leadership, |
|
development, and education; in addition to its community |
|
organizing efforts, this exceptional organization reaches out to |
|
the community through such projects as La Escuela Popular and |
|
newspapers like Voz de Mujer and Unidad y Fuerza; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dedicated to justice in the workplace, |
|
La Mujer Obrera was instrumental in the passage of legislation |
|
that made it a felony to fail to pay workers the wages they had |
|
earned; this outstanding organization has worked hard to give |
|
voice to the concerns of Mexican American women and their |
|
families and is truly deserving of legislative recognition for |
|
its many contributions; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
80th Legislature, hereby commend La Mujer Obrera for its many |
|
accomplishments and extend congratulations to this exemplary |
|
organization on the occasion of its 25th anniversary; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
La Mujer Obrera as an expression of high regard from the |
|
Texas Senate. |
