Fernando Guerra |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Fernando Guerra, |
|
who died January 11, 2007, at the age of 96; and |
|
WHEREAS, Fernando Guerra was born June 29, 1910, in |
|
San Antonio to Amado Guerra and Joaquina Garza de Guerra; he |
|
graduated from Brackenridge High School and was the first |
|
Mexican American from San Antonio to graduate from |
|
The University of Texas College of Pharmacy; and |
|
WHEREAS, After working as a pharmacist for Socorro Drug |
|
Store and Navarro Drug Store, Mr. Guerra opened Farmacia Guerra |
|
in 1939; he sold the pharmacy in 1973, and at one time, he owned |
|
and operated four pharmacies in San Antonio; and |
|
WHEREAS, He was married for many years to Eva Vela Guerra, |
|
the mother of his four children, who preceded him in death; in |
|
1993, he married Herlinda M. Bernal; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Guerra was active in many civic |
|
organizations and boards, including the Pan American Optimists, |
|
the Bexar County Pharmaceutical Association, the Texas |
|
Pharmaceutical Association, the Family Services Association, the |
|
Mexican Chamber of Commerce, and Saint Anthony's Day Care Center |
|
Board; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Guerra received many honors over the years, |
|
and he especially cherished the tribute he received from the |
|
San Antonio Association of Cuban Physicians in Exile; the |
|
City of San Antonio recognized him in 1999 by naming a street in |
|
his honor near his childhood home and his pharmacy; and |
|
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he |
|
gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued |
|
counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Guerra was a devoted husband, father, and |
|
grandfather, and he will long be remembered with affection and |
|
admiration by all who were privileged to share in his life; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the |
|
bereaved family of Fernando Guerra: his wife, Herlinda Bernal Guerra; |
|
his daughters, Dardanella G. Cardenas and Irma G. Perez; his |
|
sons, Dr. Fernando A. Guerra and Raul E. Guerra; his stepsons, |
|
Dr. Ernesto Bernal and the Reverend Eddie Bernal; and his |
|
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy |
|
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this |
|
day, it do so in memory of Fernando Guerra. |
