SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 163
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay
tribute to Connie Jefferson Matthews on the grand occasion of his
100th birthday; and
       WHEREAS, A native Texan, Connie Matthews was born
February 24, 1907; as a young man, he was a working cowboy in
West Texas; and
       WHEREAS, After his marriage, he became a rancher on his own
land in East Texas near Lindale; a model of self-reliance,
sixty-five years ago he built a home for his bride, Alma, using
lumber that he milled from trees he had cut down on his land and
rocks that he hauled from his land for the exterior of the house;
he has continued to live in the house to this day; and
       WHEREAS, A beloved and respected leader in his community,
Mr. Matthews is noted for his courage, his compassion for others,
and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; he
continues to drive and to garden and twice a week goes dancing
with friends; and
       WHEREAS, In celebration of his birthday, friends and
family are gathering on February 25, 2007, to congratulate him
on this momentous occasion and to share in this milestone in his
life; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby recognize Connie Jefferson Matthews as
a treasured citizen of the Lone Star State; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
