SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 165
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
to join the Texas chapters of the Alzheimer's Association in
recognizing February 6, 2007, as Texas Alzheimer's Awareness
Day; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative
disease of the brain's nerve cells that results in impaired
memory, thinking, and behavior, and, ultimately, death; and
WHEREAS, Approximately four and one-half million Americans,
including 280,000 Texans, have Alzheimer's disease; the
Alzheimer's Association and the National Institute on Aging
estimate the costs for treating persons with the disease are
$100 billion annually; and
WHEREAS, A recent survey revealed that one in 10 Americans
has a family member with Alzheimer's and one in three Americans
knows someone with the disease; the number of Americans with
the disease is estimated to reach anywhere from 11.3 million
to 16 million people by the year 2050; and
WHEREAS, Extensive research has been conducted since
Dr. Alois Alzheimer first described the symptoms and the disease
100 years ago, and several promising drug treatments have been
introduced that delay the onset of disease symptoms; and
WHEREAS, The Alzheimer's Association and affiliated state
chapters are bringing attention to Alzheimer's disease and
working to find a cure; the Texas Senate commends their worthy
efforts; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby recognize February 6, 2007, as Texas
Alzheimer's Awareness Day; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
recognition of Texas Alzheimer's Awareness Day.
