SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 195
 
  In Memory
  of
  Adelaide Tambo
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of Adelaide Tambo, who died January 31, 2007,
  at the age of 77; and
         WHEREAS, A resident of Johannesburg, South Africa, and a
  lifelong activist against apartheid, Adelaide Tambo was a mother
  figure for antiapartheid persons in exile and an impassioned
  advocate for the rights of the elderly and disabled; and
         WHEREAS, A well-known heroine of the nation of South Africa,
  Mrs. Tambo was born July 18, 1929; she was the widow of African
  National Congress leader Oliver Tambo; the couple met at the
  launch of a new branch of the African National Congress Youth
  League; and
         WHEREAS, Upon the advice of African National Congress
  activists, Adelaide and Oliver Tambo fled South Africa in 1960,
  and Mr. Tambo served as the group's leader in exile; throughout
  the years of struggle for freedom and equal rights for all of
  South Africa's citizens, Adelaide Tambo was a symbol of strength,
  resolve, and compassion and served as an inspiration to
  generations of that nation's freedom fighters; and
         WHEREAS, While in exile, Mrs. Tambo worked as a nurse to
  support her own family, while helping the families of other
  exiles; she was a founding member of the Afro-Asian Solidarity
  Movement and the Pan-African Women's Organization, and she
  worked with the International Defense and Aid Fund to identify
  and assist families whose children left South Africa after 1976;
  and
         WHEREAS, Later in life, she devoted herself to furthering
  the rights of the elderly and the disabled; in 2002, she received
  South Africa's top decoration, the Order of the Baobab in Gold,
  for her exceptional commitment to the struggles against
  apartheid and her dedication to community service and nation
  building; and
         WHEREAS, A woman of towering courage and strength,
  Adelaide Tambo dedicated herself to the freedom of her people,
  and she will long be remembered with affection and greatest
  respect by all whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
  bereaved family of Adelaide Tambo: her children, Tembi, Dali,
  and Tselane; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
  day, it do so in memory of Adelaide Tambo.
