Adelaide Tambo |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Adelaide Tambo, who died January 31, 2007, |
|
at the age of 77; and |
|
WHEREAS, A resident of Johannesburg, South Africa, and a |
|
lifelong activist against apartheid, Adelaide Tambo was a mother |
|
figure for antiapartheid persons in exile and an impassioned |
|
advocate for the rights of the elderly and disabled; and |
|
WHEREAS, A well-known heroine of the nation of South Africa, |
|
Mrs. Tambo was born July 18, 1929; she was the widow of African |
|
National Congress leader Oliver Tambo; the couple met at the |
|
launch of a new branch of the African National Congress Youth |
|
League; and |
|
WHEREAS, Upon the advice of African National Congress |
|
activists, Adelaide and Oliver Tambo fled South Africa in 1960, |
|
and Mr. Tambo served as the group's leader in exile; throughout |
|
the years of struggle for freedom and equal rights for all of |
|
South Africa's citizens, Adelaide Tambo was a symbol of strength, |
|
resolve, and compassion and served as an inspiration to |
|
generations of that nation's freedom fighters; and |
|
WHEREAS, While in exile, Mrs. Tambo worked as a nurse to |
|
support her own family, while helping the families of other |
|
exiles; she was a founding member of the Afro-Asian Solidarity |
|
Movement and the Pan-African Women's Organization, and she |
|
worked with the International Defense and Aid Fund to identify |
|
and assist families whose children left South Africa after 1976; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Later in life, she devoted herself to furthering |
|
the rights of the elderly and the disabled; in 2002, she received |
|
South Africa's top decoration, the Order of the Baobab in Gold, |
|
for her exceptional commitment to the struggles against |
|
apartheid and her dedication to community service and nation |
|
building; and |
|
WHEREAS, A woman of towering courage and strength, |
|
Adelaide Tambo dedicated herself to the freedom of her people, |
|
and she will long be remembered with affection and greatest |
|
respect by all whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the |
|
bereaved family of Adelaide Tambo: her children, Tembi, Dali, |
|
and Tselane; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy |
|
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this |
|
day, it do so in memory of Adelaide Tambo. |
