Donald Ray Massengale, Sr. |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Donald Ray Massengale, Sr., who died |
|
January 3, 2007, at the age of 69; and |
|
WHEREAS, Donald Massengale was born April 23, 1937, in |
|
Jacksboro, Texas; he graduated from Jacksboro High School and |
|
attended Texas Christian University on a basketball scholarship, |
|
but golf was his true gift; and |
|
WHEREAS, While a student at Texas Christian University, |
|
Don won the Southwest Conference championship, and in 1958, he |
|
won the Texas State Amateur; he joined the Professional Golfers |
|
Association tour in 1960 and won several tournaments during his |
|
career, including the 1966 Canadian Open, the 1966 Bing Crosby |
|
Pebble Beach Celebrity Pro-Am, and the 1972 National Club |
|
Professional Championship; and |
|
WHEREAS, Don left the tour to spend more time with his |
|
family and came home to Texas, and he became head professional at |
|
several golf courses in the Houston area; at the age of 50, he |
|
joined the Senior Professional Golfers Association tour and won |
|
two tournaments before retiring again from tournament golf; he |
|
began giving private golf lessons and shared his skills and |
|
experience as a teacher and mentor with students of all levels, |
|
eventually opening the Massengale Golf Academy with his son |
|
Donnie; and |
|
WHEREAS, Don was a devout Christian who practiced his faith |
|
in his daily life; he was a member of Faith Community Church in |
|
The Woodlands, where he was active in the small group ministry; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and kindness, Don |
|
gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued |
|
counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and |
|
WHEREAS, Don was a devoted husband and father, and his |
|
family and friends will continue to live with the cherished |
|
memories of his life and his many accomplishments; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the |
|
bereaved family of Donald Ray Massengale, Sr.: his loving wife |
|
of 43 years, Judy; his sons and daughters-in-law, Donnie and |
|
Laurie Massengale and Mark and Korin Massengale; his five |
|
grandchildren; and his brother and sister-in-law, Rik and |
|
Cindy Massengale; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy |
|
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this |
|
day, it do so in memory of Donald Ray Massengale, Sr. |
