SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 317
 
  In Memory
  of
  Patrick Laverne Hubert
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of
  Kleberg County in mourning the loss of Dr. Patrick Laverne Hubert,
  who died December 2, 2006, at the age of 79; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Hubert was a veterinarian, rancher, and
  community leader in South Texas who was well known for his
  devotion to his family, his passion for baseball, his loyalty to
  Texas A&M University, and his service to his community and his
  church; and
         WHEREAS, He was born in Vattmann on December 11, 1926, and
  he lived in Kleberg County almost all of his life; he graduated
  from Riviera High School in 1944 and attended Texas A&M University,
  earning a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1952; and
         WHEREAS, Baseball was one of Dr. Hubert's greatest passions
  all of his life; he distinguished himself as an outstanding
  pitcher for the Fighting Texas Aggies, and he was inducted into
  the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 1980; he played
  semiprofessional baseball with the Sinton, Texas, Plymouth
  Oilers for two years and coached hundreds of local children in
  his 40 years of involvement with the Little League program; in
  the 1970s, he was named "Mr. Baseball, Kingsville, Texas," and in
  2005, the Riviera High School baseball field was dedicated in his
  honor; and
         WHEREAS, After receiving his veterinary medicine degree,
  he served in the Air Force for two years and then returned to
  College Station and taught at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary
  Medicine from 1954 through 1958; and
         WHEREAS, After moving back to Kingsville, he operated
  Hubert Veterinary Hospital for the rest of his life while
  also ranching and farming in Kleberg and Jim Wells Counties;
  he received wide recognition and numerous awards for his
  many accomplishments and his valuable service in the field
  of veterinary medicine, and he was named an Outstanding
  Conservation Rancher in 2000; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Hubert was active in numerous civic
  organizations and served on the boards of directors of the
  city-county health department and parks department and the
  Riviera Independent School District; he was a longtime member
  and former president of the Rotary Club, and he was actively
  involved with the Kleberg County Livestock Show; he served on the
  board of the Kleberg First National Bank for 20 years; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Hubert was a lifelong, active member of Our
  Lady of Consolation Church at Vattmann, where he attended daily
  mass and served on many parish committees; he was an altar server
  and had been an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist since
  1976; and
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
  and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
  his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
  bereaved family of Dr. Patrick Laverne Hubert: his wife of
  54 years, Goldia Burroughs Hubert; his children, Patricia Booth,
  Sara Hoog, Laura Surovic, Vernie Hubert, Dr. Francis Hubert,
  Mary Best, Martin Hubert, Elizabeth Alsop, and John Hubert; his
  sister, GeorgeAnne Muckleroy; his brother, Dr. Thomas Floyd Hubert;
  and his 31 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
  so in memory of Dr. Patrick Laverne Hubert.
