SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 331
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
to pay tribute to Ala Loretta Hicks on the grand occasion of her
100th birthday; and
       WHEREAS, Ala Hicks was born in Tahoka, Lynn County, Texas,
on February 28, 1907; she was the oldest of 13 children born to
Archie Noah Samford and Lydia Dee Saint Clair; and
       WHEREAS, She married Walter Lowell Hicks on January 6, 1926,
and has been blessed with five children, Walter Dean Hicks,
Vernon M. Hicks, Curtis D. Hicks, J. Louis Hicks, and Lindon E. Hicks,
14 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren; and
       WHEREAS, In September of 1931, Mrs. Hicks and her family
moved by covered wagon from Hico in Hamilton County to Oakville
in Live Oak County; in the 1940s, they moved to the Three Rivers
area in Live Oak County; and
       WHEREAS, Well known for her many talents, Ala Hicks is a
self-taught artist and pianist, an award-winning horticulturist,
and a gifted seamstress who has made quilts for three generations
of her family; and
       WHEREAS, She is a devout Christian who has demonstrated
exceptional devotion to her family, friends, church, and country;
she is a beloved and respected member of her community and is
noted for her charm, her courage, and her generosity of spirit;
now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby recognize Ala Loretta Hicks as a
treasured citizen of our state and extend to her best wishes
for a joyous 100th birthday celebration; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
