SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 368
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Shamere Welcome, a senior at Eisenhower High School in
Houston, who was recently named a 2007 Texas Youth of the Year
finalist by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America; and
       WHEREAS, Boys and Girls Clubs are neighborhood-based clubs
that address today's most pressing issues for young people; the
clubs promote improved self-image for members and encourage
community involvement, strong moral values, and improved life
management skills; and
       WHEREAS, Shamere has been a member of the Salvation Army
Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Houston for four years; she is
president of her Keystone Club, a tutor for POWER Hour, and an
instructor in the computer laboratory; she plans to attend the
University of Houston and study for a degree in mathematics; and
       WHEREAS, She is active in Family, Career and Community
Leaders of America, the Color Guard, and the Pep Squad; she has
given generously of her time to the Veterans Affairs Medical
Center, the Salvation Army, and a local shelter that helped feed
victims of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina; and
       WHEREAS, Shamere's selection as a Texas Youth of the Year
finalist is a tribute to her exceptional talents and her
enthusiasm for service; she is an exemplary young woman, and she
demonstrates the fine spirit shown by the many young people in
the State of Texas who volunteer to improve their communities;
now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend Shamere Welcome for being a 2007
Texas Youth of the Year finalist and extend to her best wishes for
success in the future; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
