SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 380
 
  In Memory
  of
  Mabel Meshach White
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of Dallas in mourning the loss of Mabel Meshach White,
  who died February 24, 2007, at the age of 92; and
         WHEREAS, Mabel Meshach was born in Smithville on
  September 1, 1914, to Benjamin and Mary Meshach; in 1936, she
  married the late William White, and together they opened
  William White Realtors; and
         WHEREAS, Mabel White was a beloved and revered citizen and a
  prominent figure in the Dallas business community; she was a member
  of the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce, the Dallas Chamber of
  Commerce, Church Women United, and Zeta Amicae Sorority, and she
  was a life member of the Young Women's Christian Association, the
  National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated, and the National
  Association of Business and Professional Women's Clubs,
  Incorporated; and
         WHEREAS, She received many honors and awards throughout
  her life, including the Christian Service Award, the Sojourner
  Truth Award, and the Trailblazer, Ombudswoman, and Charter
  Member Awards from South Dallas Business and Professional
  Women's Club, Incorporated; she was named Zeta Phi Beta Woman of
  the Year and received the Savvy Award, the Willow Award, and the
  Heritage Award; she was honored by Bank of America as a "Legend in
  Business" in 1997; and
         WHEREAS, Mabel White was the first African American
  chairwoman of the board of directors of the American Cancer
  Society, and her work for that organization led to the naming of
  an annual outreach event in her honor; and
         WHEREAS, Mabel was a devout Christian who practiced her
  faith in her daily life; she was a member of Good Street Baptist
  Church for more than 60 years, and she served as president of its
  Missionary Society and as vice president of the Good Street
  Federal Credit Union; she was on the board of the Good Haven
  apartment complex; and
         WHEREAS, Mabel White will be remembered for her warmth, her
  wisdom, and her vitality and she leaves behind memories that will
  be treasured forever by her family and many friends; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
  bereaved family of Mabel Meshach White; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
  day, it do so in memory of Mabel Meshach White.
