SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 427
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Matt Taylor for his many accomplishments and for his
many years of service with the United States Department of
Education; and
       WHEREAS, Matt grew up in McIntosh, Alabama, a small
Choctaw Indian community where his parents instilled in him the
value of a good education; after he graduated from high school,
he attended Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas; and
       WHEREAS, Matt left college to join the United States Army,
where he served for three years in the Medical Corps; after his
service in the military, he returned to Wayland Baptist College
and completed his bachelor's degree, graduating in 1968; and
       WHEREAS, While working for the Texas Employment
Commission, Matt earned a master's degree at Louisiana Tech
University through a program sponsored by the commission and the
United States Department of Labor; he earned his degree in one
year, and his subsequent work led to a job with the United States
Department of Education; and
       WHEREAS, In 1974, Matt began his career with the
United States Department of Education, where he helped expand
postsecondary opportunities to underserved populations; he
retired in 2006, and his effective leadership, his exemplary
dedication to his work, and his commitment to students will be
greatly missed at the department; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend Matt Taylor for his many
achievements and extend to him best wishes in all his future
endeavors; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
