SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 461
 
  In Memory
  of
  James E. Bauerle
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of Dr. James E. Bauerle, who died
  February 6, 2007, at the age of 83; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. James Bauerle was a former regent of
  The University of Texas System and a longtime oral and
  maxillofacial surgeon in San Antonio; he was born on
  September 24, 1923, in Hamilton Pool, Texas; he was raised in
  Sandy, and he graduated from Waco High School in 1939 at the age
  of 15; and
         WHEREAS, He received a bachelor of science degree from
  The University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 1943 at the age of
  19; he entered the United States Army and studied dentistry; he
  earned a doctor of dental surgery degree from Saint Louis
  University School of Dentistry in 1946 and was commissioned a
  captain in the Army Dental Corps; and
         WHEREAS, In 1950, he received a master's degree in oral
  surgery from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry; he
  was assistant chief of oral surgery at Walter Reed Army Hospital
  and then chief of oral surgery at Fort Bliss in El Paso; from 1952
  until 2006, he maintained a private practice in oral and
  maxillofacial surgery in San Antonio; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Bauerle worked hard to improve the practice of
  dentistry in Texas and on the national and international levels
  through his active participation in many professional organizations;
  in recognition of his contributions to dentistry and to the
  Texas Dental Association, he received the association's Gold
  Medal Award in May of 2002; and
         WHEREAS, From his days as a student in The University of Texas
  College of Pharmacy, he maintained a love for the university and
  was an avid Longhorn fan; in 1973, Governor Preston Smith
  appointed him to a six-year term on the university system's board
  of regents, and he served as chairman of the Buildings and
  Grounds Committee at a time of rapid growth; and
         WHEREAS, He received a University of Texas Health Science
  Center Medallion Award for his role in establishing the center's
  dental school in San Antonio; and
         WHEREAS, He was proud of his association with the dental
  school and continued to be a mentor in and outside of the
  classroom to several generations of dentists in San Antonio and
  across the state; he established a professorship at the school
  and participated in the Hollers Lectureship at the dental school
  each year; and
         WHEREAS, He enjoyed the many friendships he developed at
  the Monday Morning Quarterback Club, the San Antonio Breakfast
  Club, the San Antonio Torch Club, and other social organizations;
  he was a Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite, Knights Templar,
  and the Shrine; he was a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church;
  and
         WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he
  leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his
  family, his many friends, and all those whose lives he touched;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. James E. Bauerle
  and extend sincere condolences to his bereaved family:  his wife
  of 23 years, Charlotte; his daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and
  Dr. Jack Pool, Nancy and Grover Campbell, and Janet and Greg Anderson;
  his three grandchildren; and his wife's children and grandchildren;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
  do so in memory of Dr. James Bauerle.
