SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 476
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
pay tribute to Flossie Jenkins Sweat on the grand occasion of her
100th birthday; and
       WHEREAS, Flossie Jenkins was born on March 26, 1907, in
the town of Shiloh in Delta County; she married Olson Sweat on
July 1, 1928; the couple and their daughter, Zora Mae, moved to
the Texas town of Colorado City in January of 1944; and
       WHEREAS, She began teaching at Kelley Elementary School as
a third-grade classroom teacher and eventually became the music
teacher for the first, second, and third grades; she also taught
private piano lessons in her home; and
       WHEREAS, She taught Sunday School classes and music in the
primary department at the First Baptist Church in Colorado City; and
       WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Sweat worked with teachers and
legislators to pass legislation providing financial security for
retired schoolteachers; their efforts were rewarded when the
governor signed the Teacher Retirement System into law in 1937; and
       WHEREAS, Flossie Sweat has been a lifelong advocate for
the Teacher Retirement System; after her husband died, she
made Austin her home and she continued to monitor legislation
regarding the retirement system; and
       WHEREAS, Mrs. Sweat has three grandchildren, five
great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter; her
family and friends will join her on March 24, 2007, to congratulate
her and celebrate her 100th birthday; the event, hosted by her
daughter and son-in-law, Zora Mae and Ross Hise, will salute this
important milestone in her life; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby recognize Flossie Jenkins Sweat as a
treasured citizen of the State of Texas and extend to her best
wishes for a wonderful birthday celebration; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
