SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 480
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Coffee Memorial Blood Center in Amarillo, which is
now hosting grand opening festivities in honor of its new
facility; and
       WHEREAS, The Coffee Memorial Blood Center is a nonprofit,
independent blood center serving 30 health care facilities in the
Texas and Oklahoma panhandles; and
       WHEREAS, The center was chartered on December 23, 1949, as
the Potter County Memorial Blood Center; its first permanent site
was a facility built and furnished by the Golding-Meadows Post of
the Veterans of Foreign Wars on West Eighth Avenue; and
       WHEREAS, The blood center quickly outgrew its building and
opened in a new facility on Highway 66 in June of 1960; the name
of the blood center was changed in 1965 to reflect its expanding
status and to honor the memory of a founding member's son,
Dr. James Robert Coffee, who died of leukemia in 1949; a larger
facility opened on Coulter Drive in 1985 and was expanded in
1994; and
       WHEREAS, The Coffee Memorial Blood Center at 7500 Wallace
Boulevard opened in January of this year; in keeping with its
commitment to provide the safest possible blood products and
transfusion services to the High Plains region, the center has
improved its collection areas and has enlarged its laboratory
space, its areas for mobile staging, and its training and
conference rooms; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend the board of directors and staff
of the Coffee Memorial Blood Center for their excellent services
and extend to all best wishes for a memorable grand opening; and,
be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
memento of this special occasion from the Texas Senate.
