Donald Ralph Walters |
| |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
|
commemorates the life of Sergeant Donald Ralph Walters, of |
|
|
Kansas City, Missouri, who died on March 23, 2003, at the age of |
|
|
33 while serving his country in Operation Iraqi Freedom; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Donald Walters was serving in Iraq with the 507th |
|
|
Army Ordnance Maintenance Company based at Fort Bliss; he and |
|
|
other members of his unit were ambushed by Iraqi forces in |
|
|
Nasiriyah after they stopped to repair stalled vehicles; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, He grew up in Oregon and joined the United States Army |
|
|
after he graduated from high school in 1988; during the first Gulf |
|
|
War, he guarded captured Iraqi soldiers; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Sergeant Walters was married and had a |
|
|
nine-month-old daughter, Amber, at the time of his death; he was |
|
|
posthumously awarded the Silver Star for gallantry with marked |
|
|
distinction, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Prisoner |
|
|
of War Medal; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Sergeant Walters was an honorable soldier whose |
|
|
dedication to duty and loyalty to his country served as an |
|
|
inspiration to others; the State of Texas and our nation are |
|
|
grateful for his outstanding service; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
|
80th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Sergeant |
|
|
Donald Ralph Walters and extend sincere condolences to his |
|
|
bereaved family; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an |
|
|
expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that |
|
|
when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sergeant |
|
|
Donald Ralph Walters. |
