SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 509
 
  In Memory
  of
  Lori Piestewa
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of Specialist Lori Piestewa, of
  Tuba City, Arizona, who died on March 23, 2003, at the age of 23
  while serving her country in Operation Iraqi Freedom; and
         WHEREAS, Lori Piestewa was serving in Iraq with the 507th
  Army Ordnance Maintenance Company based at Fort Bliss; she and
  other members of her unit were ambushed by Iraqi forces in
  Nasiriyah after they stopped to repair stalled vehicles; and
         WHEREAS, Lori was a Hopi Indian and was the daughter of a
  Vietnam veteran and the granddaughter of a World War I veteran;
  she was a source of great pride for the 8,200 people in the town
  of Tuba City on the Navajo Reservation close to Hopi land; she was
  the first American servicewoman to be killed in the war in Iraq;
  she was the mother of two children; and
         WHEREAS, Specialist Piestewa was an honorable patriot who
  served her country faithfully and courageously; for her
  dedication and loyalty to her country, the State of Texas and
  this nation are eternally grateful; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Specialist
  Lori Piestewa and extend sincere condolences to her bereaved
  family; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
  expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that
  when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
  Specialist Lori Piestewa.
