SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 517
 
  In Memory
  of
  Harry B. Orem
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Harry B. Orem, who
  died March 6, 2007, at the age of 80; and
         WHEREAS, Harry Orem was born November 4, 1926, in Houston;
  his family moved to San Antonio when he was in elementary school,
  and he graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1944; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Orem joined the United States Navy, serving on
  the USS Maddox, the USS Spangler, and the USS Mansfield; he left
  active duty in 1947 and joined the United States Navy Reserve,
  where he served until he retired in 1986 with the rank of
  commander; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Orem returned to San Antonio in 1947 and
  earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in
  biology from Trinity University; in 1953, he began a long and
  exemplary career with Alamo Heights Independent School District;
  and
         WHEREAS, During his tenure with the district, he served as
  a coach, teacher, assistant to the superintendent, assistant
  principal, high school principal, assistant superintendent, and
  acting superintendent; after his retirement in 1994, he served as
  a school board trustee; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Orem was a devout Christian who practiced his
  faith in his daily life, and he was an active member of Alamo
  Heights Baptist Church; and
         WHEREAS, He met Mary Ann Hawkins at Cambridge, while he was
  a coach and she was a first-grade teacher, and he married her in
  June of 1948; she preceded him in death after 58 years of
  marriage; and
         WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and generosity, he
  gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, kindness, and
  compassion will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
         WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he
  will continue to live in the hearts and minds of those he left
  behind; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
  80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
  bereaved family of Harry B. Orem: his son and daughter-in-law,
  Tim and Janice Orem; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and
  John Neill; and his five grandsons; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
  day, it do so in memory of Harry B. Orem.
