SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 535
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Paul Quinn College as it commemorates 135 years of
educational excellence by observing Founders' Week 2007, which
is being celebrated March 28 through April 4, 2007; and
       WHEREAS, Paul Quinn College was founded in Austin on
April 4, 1872, by a small group of African Methodist Episcopal
preachers; in 1877, the college was moved to Waco and was called
Waco College; there, in a modest one-building trade school,
newly-freed slaves were taught the skills of blacksmithing,
carpentry, tanning, and saddle work; and
       WHEREAS, Under the direction of Bishop William Paul Quinn,
African Methodist Episcopal districts were set up throughout the
South; as funds became available, the college was able to
purchase land and to expand the curriculum to include such
subjects as Latin, mathematics, music, theology, and English;
and
       WHEREAS, The college was chartered by the State of Texas
in May of 1881 and renamed Paul Quinn College in honor of
Bishop William Paul Quinn; the college was moved to Dallas in
1990, and it has continued to grow through the years as a result
of strong and determined leadership; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, and
staff of Paul Quinn College for their dedication to the founding
principles of the college and extend to them best wishes for a
celebratory Founders' Week; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
memento of this special occasion.
