SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 543
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Houston Alumni Chapter of Huston-Tillotson
University, which is sponsoring its annual university choir
concert; and
       WHEREAS, Huston-Tillotson University was formed on
October 24, 1952, when Samuel Huston College and Tillotson
College united and became the sole provider of higher education
for African Americans in Central Texas at the time; when these
two institutions joined together, they took as their motto, "In
Union, Strength"; and
       WHEREAS, The roots of Tillotson College date back to 1875
and build upon the work of the Freedmen's Aid Society of the
American Missionary Association of the Congregational churches;
Samuel Huston College had its Austin beginnings in 1878 under the
auspices of the West Texas Conference of the Methodist Episcopal
Church; and
       WHEREAS, The annual concert sponsored by the Houston Alumni
Chapter of Huston-Tillotson University is being held at the
historic Saint John Missionary Baptist Church on April 15, 2007;
this event provides an excellent opportunity for the university's
choir to share its musical talents with the Houston community; now,
therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend the Houston Alumni Chapter of
Huston-Tillotson University on the occasion of its annual choir
concert presentation; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
this outstanding organization as an expression of esteem from the
Texas Senate.
