SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 557
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Sam Murphey, who is retiring after 38 years of loyal
service to his country in the military and in civilian federal
service; and
       WHEREAS, Following his graduation from The University of Texas
at Austin, Sam Murphey began a 22-year distinguished career in
the United States Army; his career included a combat tour in
Vietnam and postings in the United States, Europe, and Korea; his
service also included a teaching assignment in the United States
Army Field Artillery School and service as air officer commander
of Cadet Squadron 29; and
       WHEREAS, Following his service in the military, Sam
continued to serve his country by joining the office of United States
Representative Chet Edwards of the 17th Congressional District
of Texas; Sam has served as Representative Edwards' district director
for 16 years, and throughout his tenure, he has handled his many
responsibilities with exceptional skill and dedication; and
       WHEREAS, Active in community affairs, Sam is past chair of
the Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and is
a cofounder of the Harker Heights Economic Development Corporation;
he is past president of the Central Texas-Fort Hood Chapter of the
Association of the United States Army and of the Central Texas
Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America; and
       WHEREAS, Throughout his military and civilian careers, Sam
has been steadfastly supported by his wife, Peggy, who has had an
admirable public service career of her own, offering invaluable
support to the members of the armed forces of our country; and
       WHEREAS, An exemplary public servant, Sam is admired and
respected by his colleagues, and his presence in the office of
the 17th Congressional District will be greatly missed; now,
therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend Sam and Peggy Murphey for their
exceptional service to our state and our nation and extend to them
best wishes for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
them as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
