       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to

centennial anniversary; and

a large irrigation system; and
       WHEREAS, San Benito had its beginnings as a small village
known as Diaz, named in honor of Porfirio Diaz, president of
Mexico; the city's growth began with the arrival of the railroad
in 1904 and the completion of the first irrigation system in 1906;
its name was changed to San Benito in honor of Benjamin Hicks, a
pioneer rancher whose charitable attitude had endeared him to the
local population; and

April 28, 1907; that same year, the first school was established

25,000 and has become a favored destination for winter tourists
