SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 612
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Lubbock Independent School District on the
occasion of its 100th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, A thriving city of more than 200,000 people,
Lubbock is known as the "Hub City," as it is the center for the
region's economy, transportation, and health care, and the
Lubbock Independent School District has served as the "Hub of
Education" on the South Plains since it was officially
established in April of 1907; and
WHEREAS, Formal education began in Lubbock County as
early as 1891, when Miss Minnie Tubbs started a school in the
unfinished county jail; the county's early settlers considered
education so important that they petitioned the
Texas Legislature for the creation of an independent school
district two years before the incorporation of the town; and
WHEREAS, A special act of the 30th Texas Legislature was
passed on April 4, 1907, incorporating Lubbock Independent
School District; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, the Lubbock Independent School
District has radically changed from a one-room county school to
that of a modern educational district with four early childhood
centers, 37 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, and four high
schools with many auxiliary campuses, and the district is truly a
tremendous asset and a source of much pride to the citizens of
Lubbock; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty,
administration, and staff of the Lubbock Independent School
District, past and present, for 100 years of educational
excellence; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the district as an expression of high regard from the
Texas Senate.
