SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 612
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
recognize the Lubbock Independent School District on the |
|
occasion of its 100th anniversary; and |
|
WHEREAS, A thriving city of more than 200,000 people, |
|
Lubbock is known as the "Hub City," as it is the center for the |
|
region's economy, transportation, and health care, and the |
|
Lubbock Independent School District has served as the "Hub of |
|
Education" on the South Plains since it was officially |
|
established in April of 1907; and |
|
WHEREAS, Formal education began in Lubbock County as |
|
early as 1891, when Miss Minnie Tubbs started a school in the |
|
unfinished county jail; the county's early settlers considered |
|
education so important that they petitioned the |
|
Texas Legislature for the creation of an independent school |
|
district two years before the incorporation of the town; and |
|
WHEREAS, A special act of the 30th Texas Legislature was |
|
passed on April 4, 1907, incorporating Lubbock Independent |
|
School District; and |
|
WHEREAS, Over the years, the Lubbock Independent School |
|
District has radically changed from a one-room county school to |
|
that of a modern educational district with four early childhood |
|
centers, 37 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, and four high |
|
schools with many auxiliary campuses, and the district is truly a |
|
tremendous asset and a source of much pride to the citizens of |
|
Lubbock; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
80th Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, |
|
administration, and staff of the Lubbock Independent School |
|
District, past and present, for 100 years of educational |
|
excellence; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
the district as an expression of high regard from the |
|
Texas Senate. |
