SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 653
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay
tribute to Jody Conradt on the occasion of her retirement as head
coach of the women's basketball team of The University of Texas
at Austin; and
       WHEREAS, A member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall
of Fame, Coach Conradt led the Lady Longhorns to 21 National
Collegiate Athletics Association tournaments, finishing in
11 Sweet Sixteens, five Elite Eights, and three Final Fours and
winning the national title in 1986 with a perfect 34-0 record,
the first women's program to go undefeated; and
       WHEREAS, Coach Conradt was the first women's basketball
coach to reach 700 victories, and she recently celebrated her
900th career win; she finished her career with a record of
900-307, second all-time among all men's and women's college
basketball coaches; one of the most important statistics of
her storied career is that 99 percent of her players earned
their degrees; and
       WHEREAS, Coach Conradt began her career at
The University of Texas at Austin in 1976 shortly after
the passage of Title IX, when women's sports still played
a minor role on campus and in society; due in large part to the
excellence of her teams and her outstanding leadership, Austin
has become one of the main centers for women's sports in the
United States; and
       WHEREAS, Coach Conradt has been a pioneer for women's
sports in Texas, and she is justly deserving of appreciation
and admiration; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend Coach Jody Conradt for her
dedication and her commitment to excellence and extend to her
best wishes for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
