SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 661
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Dr. James W. Callicutt on the occasion of his
retirement as professor of social work at The University of Texas
at Arlington after 39 years of outstanding service; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Callicutt began his illustrious career in
social work as a child welfare worker in his native state of
Tennessee in 1953; he subsequently held various positions in the
state before going to Massachusetts to work as a clinical social
worker while completing his doctoral studies at Brandeis University;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Callicutt joined the faculty of the newly formed
social work program at The University of Texas at Arlington in
1968 as assistant dean; he has performed pioneering work in the
years since, building curricula, writing grants, representing
the university, and serving as a mentor to countless students and
other faculty members; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Callicutt established collaborative programs
with numerous other universities throughout the state; his work
enabled many of these schools to develop their own independent
programs in social work; he has also been instrumental in making
it possible for many nontraditional students to have access to
social work programs, and their professional education has had
a positive impact on the lives and careers of people across the
state; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Callicutt has exemplified the spirit of
social work, and over the years has earned many awards for his
exceptional work; the Tarrant County unit of the National
Association of Social Workers named him Social Worker of the Year
in 1993 and conferred on him a Lifetime Achievement Award in
1998, and he was recently inducted by the National Association
of Social Workers as a Social Work Pioneer; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. James W. Callicutt for his
invaluable contributions to the field of social work in Texas
and to the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at
Arlington and extend to him best wishes for the retirement years
ahead; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
