SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 662
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Austin on the
grand occasion of its 108th anniversary; and
       WHEREAS, The Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church began
in 1899 with a small congregation of five families that met
regularly in the homes of Carrie Walton and Mr. and Mrs. Denmon;
and
       WHEREAS, The group moved to Poquito and 22nd Street and
named the church Main East Austin Baptist Church; in 1957, a new
structure was completed and the church's name was changed to
Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church; and
       WHEREAS, In 1989, the church moved into a larger building on
East 38 1/2 Street to accommodate the growing congregation and then
moved to a larger facility, its present site at 5900 Cameron Road
in 1994; and
       WHEREAS, Under the wise stewardship of its past leaders and
the outstanding guidance of Senior Pastor A. W. Anthony Mays, who
has led the church since 1986, the church has continued to grow
and to undertake many worthy projects; and
       WHEREAS, The church has ministered faithfully to the
spiritual needs of many Christians over the years; the
celebration of its 108th anniversary is an expression of the
church's enduring commitment to its holy mission and its
dedication to the community; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the clergy and the
members of the congregation of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist
Church for a memorable 108th anniversary celebration; and, be it
further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the church as a memento of this special day.
