SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 676
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
join the citizens of Decatur in recognizing Martha Hughes for her
many years of exceptional service as a volunteer in the Decatur
community and as a founding board member of the Decatur Public
Library; and
       WHEREAS, Martha Hughes has been a leader in the Decatur
community for more than 40 years, and the city has greatly
benefited from her support of the arts and tireless work on
behalf of the Decatur Public Library; and
       WHEREAS, Martha and other civic leaders approached the
Decatur City Council in 1967 seeking funds for a public library;
with the council's help and money donated to the project by local
citizens who served as actors in a commercial, Martha began her
efforts to establish the city's library; and
       WHEREAS, The doors of the Decatur Public Library were
opened in 1968 with Martha as the volunteer librarian; after
thousands of hours of volunteering, she continues to serve the
library as a volunteer on a weekly basis and as a founding member
of the board of directors; and
       WHEREAS, Martha Hughes has had a significant impact on the
lives of the citizens of Decatur, and she is being recognized
on April 16 for her exceptional generosity and volunteerism on
behalf of her community and state; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend Martha Hughes for her many years
of volunteer work on behalf of the Decatur Public Library and her
exceptional contributions to the Decatur community; and, be it
further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
