SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 681
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
recognize Dr. John W. Allen, who is retiring from a distinguished
career in oral and maxillofacial surgery in which he has served
as a clinician, an educator, and a mentor; and
       WHEREAS, A native of Luling, Texas, Dr. Allen received his
undergraduate education at Texas A&M University in the field of
zoology; he attended Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas and
was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental
Society, the Baylor Odontological Honor Society, and the
Psi Omega Dental Fraternity; and
       WHEREAS, Following graduation, he completed a residency at
Baylor University Medical Center and Baylor College of Dentistry;
he received a certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery with
a master of science in dentistry degree from Baylor University in
Waco; and
       WHEREAS, Immediately following completion of his
residency, Dr. Allen was invited to join the faculty at Baylor
College of Dentistry and the medical staff at Baylor University
Medical Center, where he has since trained countless dental
students, interns, and residents; and
       WHEREAS, An outstanding oral and maxillofacial surgeon,
professor, and administrator, Dr. Allen became a fellow of the
American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a
diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery; in 1982, he served as president of both the Texas
Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Southwest
Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; and
       WHEREAS, Dr. Allen was awarded the academic rank of
professor with tenure at Baylor College of Dentistry; as an
educator, he was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1970 and
has been recognized as an Outstanding Professor by the Baylor
Odontological Honor Society, an Outstanding Alumnus by
Psi Omega Dental Fraternity, and Instructor of the Year; and
       WHEREAS, A recognized expert in his field, Dr. Allen
has lectured extensively to dental, medical, and nursing
professional associations throughout the state; he is active in
the affairs of Baylor University Medical Center, his primary
hospital, and has served on numerous governing committees; and
       WHEREAS, Devoted to his profession and to his community,
Dr. Allen has dedicated his life to providing superior oral and
maxillofacial surgery care for Dallas area residents and has been
awarded fellowship in the American College of Dentists; and
       WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman, and a man of many talents,
Dr. Allen is greatly admired by his dental and medical colleagues
in this state and across the country for his excellent work in the
field of oral and maxillofacial surgery; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. John W. Allen for his
exceptional accomplishments in the field of oral and
maxillofacial surgery and congratulate him on his retirement;
and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
Dr. Allen as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
