SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 690
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Albert Drake, who recently won the 2007 Poetry Out
Loud Texas state championship competition; and
       WHEREAS, The Writers' League of Texas and the
Texas Commission on the Arts hosted the annual competition for
the second year in a row; the event is also supported by the
National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation; and
       WHEREAS, Poetry Out Loud is a nationwide poetry recitation
contest for high school students that fosters an awareness and
appreciation of the rich oral tradition of poetry; and
       WHEREAS, Albert is a student at Carver Magnet High School
in Aldine; as winner of the state championship competition, he
will travel to Washington, D.C., and compete for a $20,000
scholarship from the Poetry Foundation; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby congratulate Albert Drake for winning
the 2007 Poetry Out Loud state championship competition and
extend to him best wishes for success at the national competition
in Washington, D.C.; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
