SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 702
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize T. N. Porter Middle School on the occasion of its 50th
anniversary; and
       WHEREAS, On May 11, 2007, the staff, alumni, and current
students will gather to celebrate Porter Middle School's rich
history and its 50th anniversary; the Ann Richards School for
Young Women Leaders will take its place in the fall of 2007; the
event will include a time capsule opening, a celebratory ceremony,
and a silent auction; and
       WHEREAS, The South Austin school was completed in 1957 and
opened its doors to 900 students and 30 teachers; it was the second
junior high school built south of the Colorado River and was
changed to a middle school in 1988; and
       WHEREAS, The school colors are blue and red and the school
mascot is the panther; it was named for Thomas Neal Porter, the
longtime chief financial officer for the Austin Independent
School District; and
       WHEREAS, From J. Davis Hill, its first principal, to
Judy Szilagyi, its current principal, T. N. Porter Middle School
has been led by excellent principals; many of its outstanding
teachers have risen to positions of greater responsibility, and
its students have won numerous awards in the arts and in athletics;
and
       WHEREAS, Over the last 50 years, the T. N. Porter Middle
School has provided superior education for students who have gone
on to succeed in all walks of life; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby honor the past and present students,
staff and faculty members, counselors, and principals of
T. N. Porter Middle School and extend best wishes to all for
a wonderful 50th anniversary celebration; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as
a memento of this significant occasion.
