SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 708
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
join citizens across the nation in recognizing April of 2007 as |
|
|
Autism Awareness Month; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Throughout the month of April, special programs, |
|
|
films, public service advertising, and other activities have |
|
|
been planned by Autism Speaks to spread awareness about autism |
|
|
spectrum disorders; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Autism Speaks is a nonprofit organization founded |
|
|
to increase awareness of autism spectrum disorders, raise funds |
|
|
for research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure |
|
|
for autism, and advocate for the needs of families affected by |
|
|
autism; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits |
|
|
a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships; |
|
|
it is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one |
|
|
in 150 children in the United States; it is recognized by the |
|
|
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a national public |
|
|
health crisis; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Due to the work of many volunteers and Autism |
|
|
Speaks, which has merged with the National Alliance for Autism |
|
|
Research and Cure Autism Now, the research into the causes of |
|
|
autism can go forward with the anticipation that one day there |
|
|
will be a cure or effective treatment; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, |
|
|
80th Legislature, hereby proclaim April of 2007 Autism Awareness |
|
|
Month and encourage all Texans to become better informed about |
|
|
this disorder; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|
|
observance of Autism Awareness Month. |
