SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 870

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the residents of Palo Pinto County in celebrating the county's 150th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, Palo Pinto County is a place of unique beauty; it is traversed by the Brazos River and is home to the famous Possum Kingdom Lake; and

WHEREAS, Created in 1856 from Bosque and Navarro Counties, Palo Pinto County was named for one of its principal streams; Palo Pinto is the Spanish name for "painted trees"; the land was a favorite territory of the early Indians and later became known for its cattle trails, cowboys, and flavor of the Old West; and

WHEREAS, Organized in 1857, Palo Pinto County was influenced by the railroads and early newspapers, such as the Palo Pinto Star; the area became noted for its beef cattle, its agricultural products, and its marketed cedar fence posts; and

WHEREAS, The county seat is Palo Pinto, and the county's principal city is Mineral Wells; Palo Pinto County is famous for its lake activities, such as hunting, fishing, and water sports, and for its popular Possum Kingdom State Park; and

WHEREAS, Over the years, area residents and elected county officials have taken care to preserve the amenities of Palo Pinto County during urban growth and development, and they deserve to be proud of its many assets today; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 80th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to the people of Palo Pinto County for their contributions to our state and extend best wishes to them as they celebrate the county's 150th anniversary; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the residents of Palo Pinto County as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. Estes
