SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 880
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on the
occasion of its 30th anniversary; and
       WHEREAS, The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was created in
1977 to provide professional support, business information, and
representation to the Hispanic business community in Houston;
and
       WHEREAS, Its primary goal in the 1970s and 1980s was to
become a viable business organization and a reliable source of
business information for the Hispanic community; its programs
continued to expand in the 1980s and 1990s, and the chamber
became a stronger advocate for local Hispanic businesses and the
growing Hispanic workforce; and
       WHEREAS, In the 1990s, the chamber addressed the issues of
sustainable growth opportunities in a competitive marketplace
and direct access to large contracts in the public and private
sectors; it recruited more members and sought leaders who
represented a wider spectrum of business activities; and
       WHEREAS, By 1996, its membership had grown to embrace more
than 1,000 members, including Hispanic women business owners;
and
       WHEREAS, Through the expansion of its membership and its
members' increased economic expertise, the chamber began to
attract more corporate sponsors and gain recognition from city
and state government and other local and national organizations;
the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has played significant
roles in the success of minority-owned businesses in Houston; and
       WHEREAS, During the last decade, the Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce has become a primary gateway for welcoming international
business to Houston; with its members' successes locally and
internationally, the Hispanic chamber has played an integral
role in Houston's growing reputation as an international trade
partner with countries such as Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina;
and
       WHEREAS, The Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is a
valuable and effective business resource for minority-owned
businesses in Houston and a conduit for its members and for
outside organizations seeking to do business with the Hispanic
community; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend members of the Houston Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce for their many contributions to progress in
the Houston business community and extend to them congratulations
on the noteworthy occasion of the chamber's 30th anniversary;
and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
