SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 897
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
recognizing Byron L. Shelley on the occasion of his retirement as
superintendent of the Amherst Independent School District after
34 years of exemplary service in education; and
       WHEREAS, Byron Shelley has served as superintendent of
the Amherst Independent School District since 1993 and was a
principal from 1989 to 1993; he has been an educator since 1973,
serving as a teacher, assistant coach, athletic director,
principal, and superintendent; and
       WHEREAS, He served in the United States Air Force from 1966
to 1970; he earned a bachelor's degree in science in 1972 from
McMurry College and a master's degree in education in 1976 from
Sul Ross State University, where he later earned a midmanagement
certificate; he received his superintendent certification from
West Texas A&M University; and
       WHEREAS, Some of his professional associations include
serving as the president of the board of directors for the
South Plains Chapter of the Texas Association of Community Schools
and as president of the Texas Rural Education Association; and
       WHEREAS, An active civic leader, he was a member of the
board of directors and a vice president for the Amherst Chamber
of Commerce and Agriculture and a director for the Littlefield
Area Livestock Show Association; he has received numerous
awards, including being named the Citizen of the Year by the
Amherst Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture; and
       WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Byron Shelley has been an
exceptional leader who has had a positive influence on the lives
of many students and teachers, and his presence at the Amherst
Independent School District will be greatly missed; now,
therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend Byron L. Shelley for his
outstanding contributions in the field of education in Amherst
and the State of Texas and extend to him best wishes for the
future; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
