SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 928
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Laredo in mourning the loss of Sister Mary de Lellis Treviño,
who died March 21, 2007, at the age of 94; and
       WHEREAS, Born Amalia Treviño on December 17, 1912,
Sister Mary de Lellis Treviño was graduated from Laredo High
School in 1933; she was an avid sports enthusiast and a high school
cheerleader who later developed a deep love for the Dallas Cowboys;
she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Webster Groves, Missouri, in
1942, the first Laredoan and Mexican American to do so; and
       WHEREAS, After taking her vows, Sister de Lellis served
as a primary teacher at Mercy Schools before earning a bachelor's
degree in chemistry at Fontbonne College and completing an
internship in medical technology; she then served as laboratory
supervisor at several Mercy Hospitals, first in Laredo and then
in several cities throughout Texas; and
       WHEREAS, Sister de Lellis returned to Laredo in 1962 and
served for over three decades at Mercy Hospital, during which
time she automated the clinical laboratory; she also played a
major role in the establishment of a Sisters of Mercy Novitiate
in Laredo; she retired in 1986 at the age of 74, but continued
to work at Mercy Casita, a community food distribution center
operated by Mercy Ministries of Laredo; and
       WHEREAS, A woman of courage, deep faith, and compassion,
Sister de Lellis was beloved by her family and friends, and she
will long be remembered for her generous spirit and her many
accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
bereaved family and friends of Sister Mary de Lellis Treviño;
and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Sister Mary de Lellis Treviño.
