SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 931
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Waterloo Records in Austin on the occasion of its 25th
anniversary; and
WHEREAS, Waterloo Records was founded by Louis Karp on
April 1, 1982, in a small building at 221 South Lamar Boulevard
with a modest bank loan and an inventory supplemented by 6,000
records from his own collection; about the same time, John Kunz
resigned from his job with a large chain store and began looking
for a place to open a similar business; and
WHEREAS, Louis and John soon became partners; they soon
earned renown and customer loyalty for their generous policy of
letting customers listen to music before buying and allowing them
to return merchandise for any reason and for attracting acts from
around the world to Austin for in-store performances; and
WHEREAS, Waterloo Records became a popular Austin hangout
that catered to the devout music fan and attracted a crowd as
eclectic as its selection; it was the first store in Austin to
carry compact discs and had expanded into the video rental
business in 1985; John bought out his partner and became the sole
owner in 1987, and he moved the store to its current location at
Sixth Street and Lamar Boulevard in 1989; and
WHEREAS, Waterloo Records is an institution that was built
on trust with a knowledgeable staff and an emphasis on customer
service; it is both an Austin landmark and a reflection of the
city's unique spirit and development; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby congratulate Waterloo Records on the
memorable occasion of its 25th anniversary and extend to all best
wishes for success in the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
memento of this special occasion.
