SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 948
       WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
join citizens across the state in celebrating May 5, 2007, as
Sir Stirling Moss Day in Texas; and
       WHEREAS, Born into a racing family, Stirling Moss acquired
his first car at the age of nine when his father bought him an old
Austin Seven, which he drove in the fields around the family's
home; and
       WHEREAS, Sir Stirling began competing in motorsports by
racing his father's BMW in local speed trials; he soon had his own
car, a Cooper 500, which he used to compete in local hillclimbs;
and
       WHEREAS, In 1950, Sir Stirling got his first works team
drive for HWM and learned much about the racing world from team
leader Lance Macklin; in 1955, driving for Mercedes, he tasted
his first victory in the British Grand Prix at Aintree, and in
1956, he won twice more with a Maserati; and
       WHEREAS, Sir Stirling Moss went on to win a total of 66
Grand Prix races over the course of his legendary career, and
he drove more than 80 different types of cars; and
       WHEREAS, One of the greatest all-around racing drivers of
all time, Sir Stirling will be honored at the 12th anniversary
of Keels and Wheels Concours d' Elegance at the Lakewood Yacht
Club in Seabrook; he is truly deserving of recognition for his
illustrious career and his countless contributions to the world
of motorsports competition; now, therefore, be it
       RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
80th Legislature, hereby commend Sir Stirling Moss on his
outstanding career and extend to him best wishes in all his future
endeavors; and, be it further
       RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
